It’s always very nice to go out to a restaurant and dine à la carte but having been on this food reviewing journey for quite a while now, I’ve come to find that one is most likely to find the Holy Grail of dining out (in my eyes: great tasting food, great staff, great atmosphere) in places that are a little out of your way. This week I had the pleasure of dining at The Highwayman pub in Whickham and had quite an enjoyable experience. Check out my food review below:
Location Of the Highwayman
The Highwayman is located on Whickham Highway, in between Whickham itself and Lobley Hill. It’s also a 15min from Newcastle City centre during rush hour. The pub itself has a considerable amount of parking spaces at the back of it, something that’s a sticking point when it comes to eating out as a family. The parking area itself also has fantastic views of Gateshead and the City Centre, something that my family and I enjoyed looking at.
I found the staff at the Highwayman incredibly friendly and welcoming. Nothing was ever too much which is what I like to see. They were just as prompt in both the drinks and food delivery as they were with the plate clearing.
The pub had a very laid-back and homely atmosphere with clean, tidy surroundings and pleasant music playing. We were seated on a table that had amazing views of Newcastle upon tyne, views I would have enjoyed more had Alex not hogged the view!
We had quite a wide range of drinks from the menu offered to us but we settled on Pepsi for my son and I, a pint of beer for daddy and flavoured water for Alex.
For starters, I had the chicken wings glazed in Bourbon, with Blue cheese sauce on the side. I knew I was having that as soon as I saw it on the menu. The wings were well-cooked and crispy and the blue cheese sauce wasn’t too vinegary and complemented the wings well. I loved the size of the portion too.
My son and Daddy both had grilled halloumi with sweet chilli sauce on the side. He’d had the same starter at another restaurant days before on an outing with friends and wasn’t too happy with how grilled (burnt!) the cheese was but this starter was just right. The only downside was that he wasn’t served a truckload of cheese because they’re so tasty that they disappear quite quickly.
Both my son and I opted for steak as our main, him with the rump steak and me with the rib-eye steak. They were served still sizzling on a hot plate with onions, seasoned chips, a mushroom and a grilled tomato. Our steaks were great and the onions were crunchy. The chips were also nice, fresh and tasty.
Daddy had the fish and chips meal and to be fair, I forgot to ask him whether he’d enjoyed his meal but seeing as all I heard were ‘hmms’ as he tucked into his meal, I’m guessing everything was fine.
Alex had a meal from the kids’ menu and we chose the pasta Bolognese made from turkey mince. She wolfed the whole thing down herself before tucking into everybody’s chips.
Daddy, Alex and I weren’t as full as my son and had left room for dessert. I chose to have the chocolate brownie with ice cream as a nice treat, Alex chose to build her Ice Cream Sunday and my son was too stuffed to have anything else! Daddy had Ice Cream too.
The answer to that question has to be yes! The ambience was lovely, the staff were friendly and the food was great. We came out of the Highwayman satisfied and pleased to have gone.
